Connectivity:

The iPhone 4 is well-specced and includes 3G/HSDPA (7.2Mbps), 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR connectivity. HTC has crammed its handset with 3G/HSDPA (7.2Mbps), 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP. The iPhones steals it (just) with support for 802.11n (1-0)

Size & Weight:

How pocket-friendly are our two phones? The Desire is the wider of the two, measuring 60.0mm to the iPhone 4′s 58.6mm. The Desire is also the taller handset, measuring 119.0mm to the iPhone 4′s 115.2mm. As for weightiness, the iPhone 4 is slightly heavier than the Desire, tipping the scales at 137g, compared to the Desire’s 135g. (2-0)

Camera:

Apple has built the iPhone 4 with a 5.0 Megapixel camera that boasts tap to focus (for both video and still photos), an LED flash, geo-tagging, plus VGA and HD video recording (720p). There’s also a front-facing camera for video calls. The Desire also sports a 5.0 Megapixel camera (with auto-focus, LED flash, face detection, smile detection, geo-tagging and video recording). There’s no real difference in basic camera quality, but the Desire lacks HD video support. (3-0)

Screen/keyboard:

As for screen size, the Apple iPhone 4 features a 3.5-inch (640 x 960) touch-sensitive LCD display. At 3.7 inches, Desire’s touch-sensitive AMOLED screen has more room. It boasts a poorer screen resolution though – 480 by 800 pixels. (3-1)

Performance:

In terms of usability, the iPhone 4′s chip is a 1GHz Apple A4, while the Desire uses a Snapdragon (QSD8250) processor, also clocked at 1GHz. iOS4 is the latest iteration of the iPhone OS, which outclasses the Android 2.1 (Eclair) with the HTC Sense UI that runs on the Desire. (4-1)

Storage:

In terms of storage capacity, the iPhone 4 features 32GB of internal storage, while the Desire features 4GB as standard. Without an expansion slot on the iPhone 4, 32GB is the maximum amount of storage available. The inclusion of a microSD expansion slot on the Desire can bump up the capacity to 32GB. (4-1)

Battery life:

The performance of these two phones will vary. But Apple boasts 7.0 hours of talktime for its iPhone 4, versus 6.7 hours for the Desire. The standby times are 300 hours for the iPhone 4 and 360 hours for the Desire. The Desire wins the round this time. (4-2)

Extras:

What’s left? The iPhone 4 also includes GPS/A-GPS, a digital compass and a clever 3-axis gyroscope. The Desire features downloadable widgets, a digital compass, GPS/A-GPS and an FM radio. (4-2)

The Apple iPhone 4 wins!

Having seen the iPhone 3GS lose out to the Desire, the iPhone 4 strikes back to win easily (4-2). It currently has the most versatile OS (which now includes multi-tasking, iBooks and video chat), the best all-round camera features, the most memory and a higher resolution display. Did we mention that it’s also the thinnest of the two phones? We did? Oh.
