HTC Droid Incredible vs. HTC Desire – Review

by Jerry D on June 28, 2010

With new and better Android phones coming out every month, it wasn’t going to take long before the HTC Desire was facing a challenge to its position as “best Android phone”. Does the HTC Incredible (aka Droid Incredible) live up to its name? Let the spec-comparing begin…

The Droid Incredible is well-specced and includes CDMA2000 1xRTT/1xEVDO/1xEVDO rev. A, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP connectivity. The Desire, meanwhile, boasts 3G/HSDPA (7.2Mbps), 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP. (0-0)

Size & Weight:

Modern phones are hardly fat and frumpy these days. The Droid Incredible measures 117.5 x 58.5 x 11.9mm, while the Desire is 119.0 x 60.0 x 11.9mm in comparison. The Desire is the bigger phone. But not by much. However, the extra millimetres counts. Put the two phones on the scales and the HTC Droid Incredible weighs 130g, while the Desire is 135g. An early score for the Incredible. (1-0)

Swinging another punch, the Droid Incredible’s 8.0 Megapixel camera features autofocus, a dual LED flash, geo-tagging and video capture. In this round, the Desire comes off second best. Its 5.0 Megapixel lens (with auto-focus, LED flash, face detection, smile detection, geo-tagging and video recording) falls short. (2-0)

The Droid Incredible features a 3.7-inch touch-sensitive AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The Desire’s touch-sensitive AMOLED screen is the same size and resolution as HTC’s other handset, so the scores remain the same. (2-0)

Performance-wise, The Droid Incredible’s processor is a 1GHz Snapdragon (QSD8650) chip, while the Desire uses a Snapdragon (QSD8250), also rated at 1GHz. Both phones use Android 2.1 (Eclair) with HTC’s Sense UI on top and have access to a flourishing Android Market. (2-0)

With 8GB of internal storage as standard, the Droid Incredible has more space than its rival. The Desire features 4GB in comparison. Like other HTC handsets, the Incredible also has a microSD interface, which can extend the overall capacity to 40GB with a 32GB microSD card. You can also expand the memory of the Desire via its microSD slot. The maximum is 32GB. (3-0)

Battery life:

With a full charge, HTC boasts 5.2 hours of talktime for its Droid Incredible, versus 6.7 hours for the Desire. The standby times are 146 hours for the Droid Incredible and 360 hours for the Desire. A defeat for the Droid Incredible here, but it’s surely too late to change the outcome? (3-1)

Both the Droid Incredible and the Desire also include GPS/A-GPS, an FM radio tuner plus a digital compass. (3-1)

The HTC Droid Incredible wins!

droid incredible HTC Droid Incredible vs. HTC Desire ReviewIf the HTC Desire was going to lose out to any other phone, then it might as well be another HTC model. While there are many features that the two handsets share (like the 3.7-inch AMOLED display), the Incredible ups the technology stakes with a far better camera, more memory and a slimmer, smaller build. Is it the best Android phone around? It’s certainly one of the best…
