iPhone 4 vs Nokia X6 – Review

by Jerry D on June 13, 2010

If you’ve read any of the other iPhone 4 battles on this site, then you’ll know that Apple’s handset is proving tough to beat. Can the Nokia X6 fare any better? It’s a good-looking phone with a decent display, a 5.0 MP camera and 32GB of memory. Let the tech-brawling begin…

The iPhone 4 is a 3G/HSDPA (7.2Mbps) phone with added 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. The X6 features 3G/HSDPA (3.6 Mbps), 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP. (0-0)

Size & Weight:

As far as size and weight are concerned, the iPhone 4 is slightly skinnier than the X6 with a chassis that’s only 9.3mm thick. But it’s also wider, measuring 58.6mm to the X6′s skinny 51.0mm. Tipping the scales at 137g, the iPhone 4 is weightier than its opponent. The X6 weighs 122g and overall it’s the more compact and balanced handset. (0-1)

First up, the iPhone 4′s 5.0 Megapixel camera features an LED flash, geo-tagging, plus HD video recording (720p) up to 30fps. For video calls, there’s also a second, front-mounted camera. The X6 also comes equipped with a 5.0 MP camera along with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Dual LED flash, geotagging and VGA video. There’s also an extra camera on the front, which is perfect for video calling. (1-1)

This is getting interesting. Headlining the Apple iPhone 4 is a 3.5-inch touch-sensitive LCD display with a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. The X6′s touch-sensitive LCD display only measures 3.2 inches. Its 360 x 640 pixel resolution is no match for the Apple display. (2-1)

In terms of processor speed, the iPhone 4′s engine is a 1GHz Apple A4 chip; while the X6 relies on a ARM 11 processor, rated at only 434MHz. iOS4 comes installed on the iPhone 4; the X6 uses the Symbian OS (Series 60), which is sturdy enough, if uninspiring. (4-1)

The iPhone 4 matches Nokia’s phone by including 32GB of internal storage space. There’s no expansion slot on the iPhone 4, so the base memory can’t be extended any further. The 32GB on the X6 also can’t be boosted as the handset lacks a memory card slot. (4-1)

Battery life:

How long will the battery last? The iPhone 4 weighs in with 7.0 hours of talktime, but the X6 in comparison boasts 8.5 hours. In terms of standby times, Apple’s phone can last 300 hours, while Nokia’s model boasts 401 hours. The X6 takes it here and deservedly so. (4-2)

The iPhone 4 also includes GPS/A-GPS, digital compass and a 3-axis gyroscope. The X6 features Stereo FM radio with RDS, GPS/A-GPS (with Ovi Maps 3.0) and a TV-out. (5-3)

The Apple iPhone 4 wins!

Are you surprised? The Nokia X6 has some tasty features, but the iPhone 4 emerges as the winner (5-3). Compared directly to the iPhone OS (version 4.0), the Symbian software is looking dated and the Ovi store can’t match iTunes for downloadable apps. The iPhone 4 hammers home its tech advantage with a great camera, HD video capture, an amazing multi-touch display and a super-thin chassis.
