Sooner or later, a plucky smartphone is going to come along and knock the all-conquering Samsung Galaxy S2 off its perch. How close does the Samsung DROID Charge get to managing this feat? We give it a 17th century demi-cannon loaded with 15kg metal balls, light the fuse and stand well back.

Highlights: the Samsung Galaxy S2 (32GB) boasts a fast 1GHz Dual-core Exynos processor processor, not to mention a slim design that’s a mere 8.49mm thick. (Yeah, that’s thinner than your iPhone 4, fanboys).

If truth be told, the DROID Charge is slightly fatter than the Galaxy S2 with dimensions of 12.0mm versus 8.49mm. The DROID Charge is also broader, measuring 68.0mm to the Galaxy S2′s 66.1mm. But neither the DROID Charge or the S2 is unwieldy. The former weighs 143g; the latter weighs a mere 116g.

The Galaxy S2 features a 4.27-inch touch-sensitive Super AMOLED Plus display (with Gorilla Glass). It boasts a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. As for the DROID Charge, its touch-sensitive Super AMOLED Plus display is ever-so-slightly bigger, measuring 4.3 inches. The screen resolution matches that of the Galaxy S2 (32GB).

The 1GHz Dual-core Exynos processor inside the Samsung Galaxy S2 (32GB) is a better, faster, altogether higher-tech option than the DROID Charge’s 1GHz, single-core Hummingbird chip.

Best Software: Galaxy S2 (32GB) (5-3)
Google’s Android 2.3 (enhanced with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI overlay and Swype text input) comes as standard on the Samsung Galaxy S2 (32GB). It beats Android 2.2 (Froyo) on the DROID Charge.

In comparison, the DROID Charge features GPS/A-GPS, DLNA content sharing, the Blockbuster Mobile Application, ThinkFree Office and a digital compass.
