Samsung Galaxy S Size DOES matter: 3 smartphones with gargantuan screens

The Samsung Galaxy S versus…

The Samsung Galaxy S is a great example of how far Samsung has come in the mobile market and it’s a stunning technology package. Running Android 2.1, it impresses with a 4.0-inch Super AMOLED (480 x 800 pixel) display. Yet it’s only 9.9mm thick. It’s a superb piece of engineering.

The Galaxy S is a lightweight handset too, weighing in at only 119g. Powered by a 1GHz processor it can be expanded to a maximum of 48GB. The 5.0 MP camera on the back supports HD video recording, while a second lens on the front enables video chat. As far as battery life is concerned, you’ll get 6.5 hours of talktime from an overnight charge.

… the Motorola Droid X…

The Motorola Droid X stands tall as one of the best (if not THE best) Android handsets around. Few smartphones can beat it. Many have tried. Like the Galaxy S, it uses Android 2.1 and features an even bigger display – 4.3 inches with a resoluton of 480 x 854 pixels.

It trumps the Galaxy S in the imaging department too. The 8.0 MP camera includes an array of features including: autofocus, a mechanical shutter (1/1000 speed), image stablization, 16:9 image capture plus 720p HD video recording. There’s also a dual LED flash.

As for the rest of the specification, the Droid X is only 9.9mm thick (the same as the Galaxy S), but it weighs a meaty 155g. Under the hood, a 1GHz processor speeds the software along and the onboard memory can be expanded up to 40GB.

… with interference from the Dell Streak

Enter the current ‘big daddy’ of the smartphone market. The Dell Streak is big. Really big. With a 5.0-inch (480 x 800 pixel) touchscreen you could argue that it’s actually a small tablet rather than a phone.

Astoundingly, while it’s one of the biggest phones we’ve seen, it’s also one of the thinnest. A depth of 9.98mm makes it seem almost impossibly slim.

Of course, there’s a downside. The Streak weighs 220g. But considering that it features a 5.0 MP camera, 32GB of memory and a 1GHz CPU, all that technology has to go somewhere.
